In 2009, one and a half months after the Awami League came to power, a 36-hour massacre took place at Pilkhana on February 25. In this, 57 army officers were martyred and 17 civilians were killed. This massacre played a role in establishing Sheikh Hasina's complete control over the army. The BDR Commission has assisted the July Memorial Museum by providing various documents, and research is ongoing.
