The movement that began in July under student leadership transformed into a mass uprising on August 5th. That morning, breaking the curfew imposed by the Awami government, millions of people began entering Dhaka. Before noon, students and people started moving toward Ganabhaban, the residence of autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Amid the flow of people throughout the capital, Sheikh Hasina fled the country. At that time, the people took control of various Awami government installations. Many were overwhelmed with emotion, and many thanked God.
